What we analyse

Associations and possible contributors — not causes

StrandLens looks at six kinds of information together. It describes patterns and possible contributing factors, shows how confident it is, and is clear about what it can't know.

Six areas of information

Hair and scalp history

When changes began, how they started, where they appear, scalp symptoms and recent life events.

  • Onset and pattern
  • Shedding compared with usual
  • Recent illness, stress, childbirth

Visible photo changes

Month-to-month comparisons of the same angles, with lighting, angle and distance consistency noted.

  • Five guided angles
  • Blur and lighting checks
  • Comparison reliability

Laboratory-report information

Values you confirm from your own reports, summarised using the laboratory's own ranges and flags.

  • Values, units and ranges
  • Lab-marked high or low
  • Changes across dates

Nutrition patterns

Which food categories appear in your week — not calorie counting, and never labelled good or bad.

  • Food-category frequency
  • Meals per day
  • Water intake

Lifestyle, sleep and stress

Sleep, stress and movement trends alongside how your shedding feels day to day.

  • Sleep hours
  • Stress rating
  • Exercise

Products, supplements and treatment consistency

What you use, how consistently, and any reactions — without ever advising changes to prescriptions.

  • Routine completion
  • Reactions
  • Start and stop dates

Possible contributing areas you may see

Each comes with why it appeared, which answers contributed, what's missing, a confidence level (limited, moderate or stronger), what you can track, and what you might discuss with a clinician.

  • Nutrition-related factors

Eating patterns and lab flags commonly discussed alongside hair shedding.

  • Stress and lifestyle factors

Stress, sleep and recent life events that may be relevant to timing.

  • Scalp-related factors

Itching, flaking, oiliness, dryness, redness or tenderness.

  • Product or styling factors

    Products, heat, tension and reactions.

  • Treatment-consistency factors

Whether routines are being followed consistently enough to evaluate.

  • Medical or hormonal factors requiring professional discussion

Information best interpreted by a clinician — StrandLens doesn't assess these.

  • Insufficient information

Shown honestly when there isn't enough to say anything useful.

What StrandLens will never do

  • Confirm a diagnosis or name the definitive root cause
  • Measure follicle counts or hair density from ordinary photographs
  • Invent or estimate laboratory values
  • Prescribe medication or suggest changing prescription treatment
  • Promise regrowth or guarantee any result

All recommendation rules live in a configurable knowledge base designed for review by a licensed dermatologist. Until that review is complete, guidance is labelled TEST MODE.
